Are Cigar Box Guitar Festivals Elligible For Non-profit and Tax-exempt Status?

Hey Everyone!

I need some help. I've been thinking since last year about founding a non-profit, tax-exempt organization for he purpose of spreading the cigar box revolution through demonstrations and exhibitions--especially to children in the form of workshops. Since then, the idea has emerged of, if possible, legitimizing the KC CBG Festival as such an entity.

I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the feasibility of this idea, any experience or any insight or advice for me as to how to proceed. I'm really desperate for some help. I'd like to get this established as soon as possible.

Thanks!

Kevin

you need to drop a line to Chickenbone John he organizes a lot of workshops over here (-:

i would guess you would have to register as a Charity for tax exempt status.

Corresponded at length with Chickenbone John. Actually, he contact me. Thanks for the suggestion!

I'm shue we can pass it off as a religion . Or an addition cbga support groops. On a serious note yes I think you can set it up

Wait, a new religion....may be worth some thought.

Here in the state of Illinois, it takes a bit of time for the state to process a request for a 501(c)(3), a tax exempt corporation.  We have a group called Lawyers for the Creative Arts http://www.law-arts.org/.  They might be able to steer you to a like-minded organization in your state.  The bookkeeping requirements for a not-for-profit are notable.  There are forms to be filed on a regular basis and your bookkeeping must be fairly tidy.

Thanks, Diane!

Gee, thanks a lot, anonymous for totally misrepresenting me efforts and my intentions. Really appreciate it. Fame is not my goal. And until you get the facts from me--maybe by actually asking what they are???--I'll thank you to keep such comments to yourself. And I mean that with all due respect.

And it isn't an idea ever week. Exaggerating doesn't help.

Everything I've done has been at personal expense. I don' begrudge that at all. But what I would like to do needs be done another way with more resources than my own. Obviously--to me anyway, even if it isn't to you. But since don't know everything I would like to do, well...I'll direct you to my opening statement.

Not to spur the depate but by the same token are you saying . Shane did started the cigar box nation for his personal benefit . Or Ben runs it to sell parts .or even yourself sell swamp witches .being the founder automatly make you self serving ?seeking non profit just make cheeper run a fest allowing more to go into it any way that's my 2 cents

THANK YOU, Mr. C.  I appreciate what you wrote here.

My name and my face is already out there. What are you think? So, stating facts and detailing my achievements is somehow...what? Self-serving? You are totally and unjustly mischaracterizing what I'm doing, and I resent you for doing so. Your opinion is noted and you have your right to it--wrong though it is! Look, just because I'm trying to think of creative and effective ways to spread the cigar box revolution, which is my only aim, sir...doesn't make me nefarious or somehow egotistical. If I'm responsible for founding the Kansas City Cigar Box Festival, I AM the face of the festival, plain and simple fact. What's wrong with that? And why shouldn't I use that fact to promote the festival and my year-round crusade to grow the festival and educate the public about CBGs and the revolution? It makes perfect sense! Why that translates automatically, to you, to me just wanting to get my name and face out there, etc. is beyond my comprehension. As for the movie, same thing. If I'm going to ask people to contribute to a motion picture, wouldn't some experience in movies and some related accomplishments--some sort of freaking resume be a GOOD thing??? What I want to do next grows out of the success I've had already at cultivating the growing appreciation and awareness of CBGs--especially among children, for which I'm really wanting to do even more about. I conduct my own version of Blues in the Schools and have been amaze at how hungry kids are about what I've presented and wish to do even more. I guess that makes me Lex Luthor, doesn't it?

You say the way you see it is what "it looks like to some of us". Well...who. Besides YOU!  It might interest you--or not, since you don't seem interested in the facts of my motivation--to know that each endeavor--all of TWO with one repeated, that's been posted here are related and have come from the same desire: to do what I can to spread the revolution. Instead of seeing what I'm doing through your flawed lens of cynicism, you might consider getting the FACTS, instead of posing suppositions. Shoot, you don't even know me from  Adam. We've never spoken, never even messaged one another until this very day...and you attempt to judge my motivation??? You might have at least tried to LEARN more about me and what I want to do and how, before you make a judgment like you did. What's the matter with you???

The great thing about America is the ability to do many things and either be corporate about it or simple, and either succeed or fail, maybe one will end up in debt and losing a house due to their passion. Another great thing is the help one can get from our government or other private entities to kickstart/boost one on their way. Even if it is something that has been around for 150 (+-) years or so, and one wants to also be strong in that field.

T.A.P. I see that you live in Canada, there are many government or socially run programs that help many of those citizens. Those use taxpayer money to operate. Are you a "pull 'em up by your bootstraps" kind of guy about those things too? Maybe it is just a lie and the anonymity you have places you in another location(?).

Anyway I understand your point, even though I feel your approach rather brash. My guess is Kevin feels he can put himself out here without scrutiny due to the comradery that appears like it is open for all.

You are just stating an opinion, and there is nothing wrong with that at all. But others might see the world differently. And even if you might be a black or white kind of guy, there are many shades of grey mixed in.

I will take my response off the air.

Leaving it, Anonymous. Thanks for your time, though.
