Selfmade, I'll have a look at some websites as the plan was from the internet. Very simple to build and a really useful tool. I made mine out of green wood and some scrap I had lying in the workshop so the whole thing was for free.

The guy holds it the wrong way around but thats a different story. This small swiss knife has a nasty and razor sharp blade and is very small and light in weight which allows really precise cuts. A tool for a lifetime!

If the bevelled side faces upwards the knife cuts like mad and tends to slice deep chunks out of the wood, almost impossible to control. But it looks better for the picture with the "Pfeil" --> (German for "arrow") logo and all...

This has been a really good discussion. I'd never shopped for a drawknife or spokeshave before and this discussion has pointed me in a different direction than I started. Thanks for the input.

Yes I use these files in the making of my necks.How ever I did invest in the new razor files but I don't like them as much. The razor files are so sharp they just dig into the neck.I would go to stewmac.com and check out the reviews before making that investment.

This is what I carve my necks on. It is simply a 2X6 clamped in a woodworking vise on one end and I use a clamp on each end and the end with the peghead has a beveled block on it that matches the angle of the peghead.

Charlotte I have used a similar system in the past and it works well. What I like about the shave pony is how quickly you can clamp and release the neck blank.   Do you rough out your necks with the rasp?  That would be a ton of work do-able but a ton of work....

Well, like I said, it takes me an hour to do a neck. That seems a time that can be safely trimmed down. One thing I like about the rasp is the control. I tried a spoke shave yesterday and it does not get into the transition areas well and then the rasp work seems more tedious. The blank I tried it on was maple with some curl and it took out a chunk. Still leaning toward the dragon rasp.

I use a sure form and a couple of really old spoke shaves then sandpaper.  I think you can't go wrong adding more tools to your collection, but as a piano repairer you already know that. 

Like the shave pony pictured a few back, I have been thinking of making one, thanks for the link, I use a speedclamp now but it always slips on me.
