1/4" phone jack - advice needed

I have a 1/4" phone jack for my CBG. The wall of the CBG is as thick as the threaded area of the jack, so there are no exposed threads available for the nut and washer. This means I have to bore out the inside of the box to more than the diameter of the jack, or the outside of the box to more than the diameter of the nut and washer. Any advice on how to do this?

  • Dittos "what they said" , and Mouser carries Switchcraft jacks (# 502-L-11 ) with a "long" .375 bushing .
  • Another good solution. Thanks Tom.
  • I've also used this method a couple of times - just go ahead and drill the hole out larger than it needs to be, then cut a small piece of thin wood and CA glue it to the inside of the box. Then you can drill a proper size hole for the jack and easily mount it. Any thin wood will do, but I like to use the beveled "side support" wood from the inside of the box that you would typically remove anyway. On this example I used a wood burner to "decorate" the outer hole for a better look. I might try the drawer pull method for a different look next time though.

  • Hi well boring the inside of the box would be a problem as you would need to use a spade Bit or a fostner bit to create the rebate this means you need to be able to get a Drill and the drill bit (spade / Fostner bit ) into the box ! or you could use a dremmel if you have one , or use a chisel and do it by hand
other methods would be to do the rebate on the outside of the box or drill a hole all the way through the box make the hole big enough for all the jack socket to pass through than make a thin mounting plate for the jack socket , the mounting plate needs three holes one for the jack socket and two small holes for screws to mount to the box , fix the mounting plate to the jack socket with the supplied nut and washer and mount the hole unit with two small screws
    hope this helps

    Damn, you guys are smart.

  • I like that solution. Thanks Tiny.
  • I bore out the inside David. The box sides usually make it difficult to get in properly, so I use a bit thats far too big to compensate for the angle.

HOWEVER - Im sure this is the worst way to do it! Iv seen guys recess the jack in a metal plug that looks cool, or cut a big hole and use a cover plate. You could do as you say and recess the outside with a good sharp wood bore - or mount it on the front of the box and not have to bother??

    Ah, decisions, decisions....
