  • I'm bummed I can't go this year. I went last year and it was my first CBG fest. I had a blast.

  • Background History of St. Louis Cigar Box Guitar Festival

Late in the year 2012 two guys met together from a site called Cigar Box Nation with a single idea of bringing a festival to St. Louis. Gary Herget and Steven Miles began building a unique collaborative relationship. They met at Blues City Deli and shared their guitar builds and sat down to draft up a plan. Several months and interviews later, they met Bill Kunz of the Hwy 61 Road House restaurant. Bill was the right guy for many reasons, his love for the music industry and knowledge of its history along with a place that’s decorated in the history and serves up St. Louis best selection of food & beverages. Bill immediate fit in with open minded collaboration. When I use the word collaboration I’m driving a key point that keeps a long time project working.

Our core value has remained steady from day one. The Hwy61 Road House CBG Festival has supported the builders and local musicians from day one. Hwy61 gives back to its community in many ways through matching fundraising for nonprofits and has opened its doors free of charge to the CBG culture every 3rd Saturday of each month. We have kept out vendor’s fee as low as possible to make it affordable to all, but it gets even better. Gary and I being in charge of vendors have used the money collected to fund club activities which extend to helping fund raising and special club events.

Bottom line is this; we knew it had to be about the community and not us. Our plan has been to give all of you a platform to enjoy what we love so much doing in our spare time. The Christmas parties, the offsite field trips and free lunches. All of you handmade root instrument builders and enthusiasts are at the heart of this special event.  We give a deep felt “Thank You!” to Bill Kunz and family for making this possible and for being the best host anyone could ask for.
