Marking a fretless guitar...

My 2 string bass calls to me softly, and I am going to play with it a bit. 

I built it fretless, mostly because I don't play. I bought some nice decorative tacks as well as some silver thumb tacks, and I am thinking of using them on the side of the neck to mark:

1. standard fret positions (at least until they get too close)

2. octaves

3. diatonic positions.

Because of being fretless, I had the idea to place them not at the normal 'dot' positions, but at the place where the fret(s) would be. Suppose i could use brass brads too...

Thoughts?

An alternative option:

These fret position markers are made using flat brass strips (available at hobby stores). They are not that hard to install and stand out well from the underlying wood.

I like that a lot, but my fretboard is glued on now. Matter of fact, I'm considering the bass finished, Couple more coats of poly-u, new strings (.095/.075, open 'G' I think? G-D tuned.Sounds like a bass guitar to me...
Are those placed staandard, or are they at finger contact position?
