So I bought one of those aluminum ukulele resonator cones and a chrome cover, like you see here sometimes.   I 'm not sure how to mount the cone inside the box, though, there are no holes for mounting screws.  How have others done it?

Thanks Scott

I've seen that but the video offers very little specifics.  I see that they cut a ring of thin plywood to have a place for the cone to sit.  But what holds it in.  Just string pressure?   Or epoxy?

would be helpful to have a picture of your resonator and the box to be able to help better, since not all cones are the same

Here is a link to the Ebay listing which has a good picture.  But no surprises, it's an aluminum cone with no holes around the edge.

Looks like the spun cone has a bevel about 1/2" inside the edge of the metal, so likely you would mark your circle to cut so that the bevel rests just inside the cut hole. Cone diameter is smaller than the cover...the cover has screws, and you likely will see that the inside edge of the cover fits tight around the cone, with the cover screws holding everything down to the box top.

Check the video that Ron has posted a link to...there's not too much detail, but hopefully you should get the general idea. The cone just sits loose in the soundwell. You ask about holes for mounting screws - the coverplate should have 12 mounting holes around the edge, and the cone should have just a single hole in the centre so that you can screw the biscuit to the the cone.

Getting the depth of the soundwell right is important. Also setting the neck angle and action so that you get enough angle over the saddle is vital to getting the cone to work right.

I find it's not too difficult, but can require several "dry fits" to get the whole thing right, in particular the neck height in relationship to the top of the box and also the neck angle.

Here is a drawing showing how I constructed one recently and a photo of the finished guitar.

SWEET reso box!   Nice work, and thank you very much for the very useful drawing.

Let me see if I got this right:  You added bracing around the bottom corners and across the back, also some inside the top, above the reso cone?  For the rings, I read that you made 4, three of them match the O.D. of the cone on thier inside diameter, and you made them 1" wide.  But the 4th was slightly different, but I'm not sure how or why.  Could you elaborate on that please?

And thanks again?

The 1/2" x 3/16" strip running around the edges of the sides and ends stiffens those parts and also increases the glueing area for the front and back.

The back has a cross shaped brace.

The front has two struts running across the box between the cone well and the neck end.The photo below shows a similar one in progress.

The three rings are 1/2" wide.

The fourth ring has an inside diameter 3/4" smaller than your cone to provide a step for the cone to sit on.

If you need more detail just ask.

More thanks to you, I've got my head around this now.  Did you make that box yourself?  It's kinda big for a cigar box.

Yes I did make the box.Chose the size to suit the reso diameter it seems in proportion, not lost on a box that is too big or crowded on one too small
