In this video, i play a few blues riffs on a one string cigar box diddley bow of my own design. The instrument features a piece of packaging twine for the string, along with a screw eye serving as the nut, a wood dowel as the bridge and. wood dowel as the neck. The tuner consists of an eye bolt with its accompanying nut, a wing nut and two washers. I demonstrate this instrument on a podcast episode and note the episode has received a lot of attention, especially recently.

You can literally use a string as a string.
Exactly. And from what i understand, you have a good supply. If one string breaks, you can tie the parts together or just replace the broken string with another one from the spool. Broken guitar strings typically require replacement by other guitar strings. Sometimes that can be a bit inconvenient.
