12 different 0.047uF caps - my ears don't hear much difference at all. My picking and fretting hand have much greater effect. what do you hear?

  • It’s good to know my ears aren’t failing the “Can you hear the difference?” test! I was looking forward to hearing you demo all those capacitors, but was surprised that the differences, if any, are barely detectable. You are the “Myth Buster” Uncle Toad! I know what not to do now; thanks.

  • It's always fun to do these kinds of experiments. I'm hearing very little (if any) difference between them. With the tone rolled off you can notice a little bit more difference but it's still really subtle. I like how some folks say they only use a certain type of tone cap because they can "hear" the difference but yet I'm guessing they couldn't watch this vid and pick out their "favorite" cap. :-)

  • here's the video to go with the photos.  I used a guitar with a complete tone bypass setting, and I built an external box with 12 capacitors of different types. details in the photo a few days ago and at the end of the video.  I didn't have the bumblebees, but I had a bunch of others. My ears hear no difference between the different caps.  My left hand fretting pressure and right hand picking have a much more profound effect.  This video is a boring 11 minutes but I spent hours trying all kinds of stuff to elicit a difference.  This myth has been busted !

    Cheers to all.
