Nice marsupial! If the tuners will fit in that space it will work. Usually the problem is the back plates of the tuners overlapping when there's not enough space. Look up zither tuners if you don't know about them already. They'll fit just about anywhere. CB Gitty sells them as 4 pack for about 4 bucks.
Great possum artwork! You could "scarf join" a longer head on her. Or use a mandolin tuning strip (they are spaced close together). Cut off two tuners from an old strip. A shorter scale length ain't a bad thing either. Slide guitar players like short scales as there is less distance to travel when making a long slide. It makes for faster play.
Space for them to fit is about all that is really required. A bit of thumb room for holding it high on the neck when fingering those first few notes comes in handy.
