I had this song stuck in my head for a bit so I decided to learn it. I was surprised to figure out it's only 2 chords (technically 4 if you count the key change in the album version). Here's a rendition of Merle Haggard's 1969 hit Okie From Muskogee on the tenor banjo & kazoo.

Intro - 0:00
Song -0:41

  • "Who doesn't love a Haggard tune?"

I grew up about a hundred miles from there. I did an unscientific poll of Muskogee residents over a couple of years time after this song came out and I'd say at least half hated Ol' Merle after he did that song. Most com\mon complaint was something like "It makes us sound like a bunch of **** hicks! 20% liked the song, and I thought I'd get attacked just for asking about ten percent of the time....

    • Thanks for chiming in. I really appreciate it. Fun song for sure but I can imagine how locals would see it differently.

  • Nicely done!

  • Rainy day cover's are good too cool

    • Thanks for checking it out BrianQ. Who doesn't love a Haggard tune?

  • Nicely done Kale! A Slinger fav at our library meetings, especially if we have someone new then we start playing all our 2-chord songs to ease them onboard.

    Happy Sunday!

    • Yeah, this is a fun one that's very easy to play and sing. Thanks for checking it out Doug.
