This is a great song written by David Lynn Jones and, if you've only heard Willie Nelson's version (which is great), I'd strongly recommend you give Jones' version a listen too. This song makes me think of my grandfather. He came to America at the age of 16. His father had come to America a decade earlier and died of pneumonia before he could bring the rest of the family over. My grandfather worked in a shoe repair shop by day and learned English at night. Through hard work and determination, he built his own version of the American dream.
