I've built a couple of one string cookie tin bows, but this was the first time I used a cigar box and incorporated an internal piezo pickup.

  • Cheers Patrick. I think my nephew has this one.
  • And the HoggStick Era begins!!! This is a nice build Paul, do you still have this one?

P.S. I like it better when Karen does the vids, she doesn't cut you off at the neck :-)

    Headless Mofo!

  • Thanks B, I've a long road to travel, but I'm loving every minute of it. I'll play around with some of those ideas.

  • basic is good!!..I can tell you're really hooked now : -)

I quite like the twangy tinny sound on it, but if you want to reduce that you could try encasing the piezo in something. I've done a few with a small square of rubber non slip matting either side, then a square of cardboard mounting board either side, then taped all round with electrical tape. I used those things, just because it's what I happened to have around...other people put hot glue and stuff or encase it in wood. I like that with what I did, if I didn't like it I could easily just take it off again! It really takes down the tinny sound anyway : -)

I've also seen others put a screwed up plastic bag into the box to improve the tone..haven't tried that one yet myself, but it's easy to try at least!

  • Hi Chris, kevin, John, Thanks for the comments guys. I'm pleased with this one, as someone who has never really been a 'builder' it has given me the confidence to press on.

    John, thanks for the tip...

Chris we'll soon be building some beauties! I'm not great with electrics, the piezo I fitted is really simple, straight out of the packet and into the cigar box and it's ready to plug in and play...

  • Hi Paul. Thanks for posting that. Those Partagas No4 boxes have quite thick tops. Not the easiest to get a good tone from but I think you have done very well with that one. I don't think the steel string is the issue. I think it is the box, but I could be wrong. Very nice work.

  • Hey mate is uncle John getting the bug too? How are you on electrics Paul you seem a bit of a top man, is that your job? What about uncle John, what is his job and what can he teach us mate? This just takes off beyond the realms of imagination. Keep up the good work, some revealing times ahead, can't wait mate. Chris. :)

  • Absolutely, thanks wes...

  • Thanks Uncle John, I can't believe what a grip this CBG thing has got on me so soon. Loving it!
  • Nice D-Bow.  Good fun instrument.
