    thanks all, amazing how a smell can bring those memories flooding back. I look back at the photos and it all looks pretty grotty, but the simplicity of those holidays was great!

    Wow! That brings back memories from my young days. We didn't caravan, or 'trailer' as we say here. But my family used to rent a "cottage" (actually more a coldwater shack) on Cape Cod in (you guessed it!) a town called Yarmouth, way back in the 60's. I'm guessing it was no more luxurious than a caravan, and probably a lot less so than most. This place didn't even have interior wallboard. Just bare studs and rafters and the outside walls. But it did have a camp gas stove and a single 30 amp power line with a few outlets - and a perpetual musty saltwater and Scotch pine odor in the air. Yet to us it seemed like a luxury holiday accommodation even if it was closer to camping out than it was to "renting a vacation place." A lot of what you sing about in your song doiesvetails nicely with my my own memories of similar times.

    Funny how no matter how far apart we live, our childhood experiences are so often so very similar.

    A caravan !  Luxury !  When I were a lad, I had a tent made of 2 ex-army ponchos, with a loose ground sheet, in a field at Point Lynas on Anglesey.  You're right about the smell of camping gaz, though.  They were innocent, simple and happy times.  Wish I could go back sometimes.
