  • They're both infinitely useful and I necker do a build without using both. Get a scrolly first tho, and look for a second hand one. You can do perfect fret slots with a scrolly, you'll never go back when it comes to a bandsaw you really need to spend a bit more need at least a 14" one. Get the scrolly first and search you tube for videos fret slotting with one
  • i don't think you need either,spend your money on a 41/2 plane , a  scraper and a profile saw..happy new year

  • cheers mate..
  • Hi Phil,

Often you wont get much response to these kind of questions posted in the blog portion of this site.

I would suggest first searching for your answer HERE since it has been discussed many times before. Or you may want to ask your questions there and get another discussion going if you dont find the answer you are looking for.

A summary of the answers you will recieve:

Majority answer, neither, many build with no such luxurys, nor feel the need to.

Next most common useful answer is band saw, but only if you have the space and funds to get a full sized one. The smaller bench top models are notoriously hard to get set up and functioning accurately.

Minority answer: If you are making a lot of fine, precision, detailed cuts in thin material, a scroll saw is very nice to have. It is not suitable for any heavy duty use.

There ya go! Hope that helps!
