  • I want to cover things right from the bare bones basics...starting the filming made me realise there was far too much to cover in one DVD, so I decided not to be too ambitious with how far it will go. I feel its better to get the basic techniques down rather than push too far and leave people baffled by too much complicated or flashy stuff. The idea is to give you a solid foundation, and then you can then pick and choose the techniques to suit yourself. I don't think theory has much of a place in this sort of tutorial...getting the guitar tuned and putting your hands in the right place are far more important...so there won't be much (or indeed anything) in the way of chord structure and scale theory. I feel it's more important that you can see and hear what you should be doing, and that you learn to listen to what you are playing, rather than worrying about whether you understand what a flatted 3rd is.
  • Sounds good John,I take it you`ll be going from basics then to more advanced as and when you get time.

  • I'm just planning on the one DVD to start with...basic 3 string, slide & fretted playing, working on both left and right hand techniques. I did want to include a bit of 4 string and maybe diddley bow, but after doing the initial shoot and plotting out a few basic techniques, it made me realise there was plenty of material to fill one tutorial, and think its better to go nice and steady concentrating on fewer aspects rather than shotgunning a whole load of stuff and covering it too quickly and thinly.
  • John, what`s the format going to be? I`d love to find several dvd`s ranging from beginners on 2,3,4 string steadily going up to stuff for decent, experienced players.

I have bought dvd/cd`s but find a lot are a mish mash where you have to search to find pieces of interest to you,the individual and your level.

I`m pretty sure you`ll make something good, having seen your free stuff.I reckon you have a crackin` style of teaching.Just give me the format I want and I`ll buy......even tho` I want it for free ;)

  • Thanks for the kind words...I'm working on a DVD...we did some initial filming and a quick rough cut, but I've not had the time to get back in the studio and get everything in the can. It's on my (very long) to do list.

Now this might go against the grain with some folks, but I can tell you, it's not going to be free...playing and building guitars is my living. If other people can afford to give away their time and effort, then that's cool, but it's not my way, and I put enough effort and time into spreading the word and helping people for little or no return, and thats all cool. There are a couple of other DVDs out there..they aren't free either..remember, free advice is worth every penny as they say.
