Murdoc_420's Progress

Guess this is the best place to start a progress thread so here we go.

I've been wanting to build a CBG for quite awhile now, past attempts to find boxes were futile but I now have found a box supplier near me :D

I found this selection of boxes, found  this site of course and started watching tutorials on You Tube.

(I was hoping to find one cool box and walked out with 7, yikes!)

Going to start with the Hoyo de Monterrey and have almost everything I need to follow Unstrung13's tutorial. Hopefully I'll be on that within a few days. It seemed to be the simplest tutorial so I figured the best place to start.

Of course the Brickhouse needs to be a Bass :D (which is my main goal for this endeavor. I'll make that one electric and get a few nice parts (gold volume knob) and tuners from CBNG.

My favorite though is the Chillin' Moose'. Sweet little box, but it's small so I figure probably more of a Uke scale, definitely electric, probably piezo.

I think I'll try a stomp box with the baccarat, though I'll probably use it more as a 'slap box'.

I'd like to turn the Romeo into an amp, but I'm getting ahead of my self.

I'll post some pics of progress and or finished g when it's ready :)

  • Thanks Blues.

Get better volume out of the piezos? I've got a huge pack on the way, just impatient ;)

  • That's looking real nice Murdoc. Luv the headstock.

The inside of the stomp box looks alot like the one I made for myself. I wound up switching to a couple of Piezo pickups, but I did use a spring accross the middle for an added reverb effect.

  • Bass almost complete, needs a few touches/sanding and finish oil.306541375?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024

Baccarat Box is now a Snare Stompbox. Planning on cutting the top off at and angle so it's a wedge for my foot, then using the wood inserts to glue on bottom for a base. Was excited to do it once the jacks came in so now I'll have to be careful to keep dust out of the speaker.

Box, jack, $0.80 spring, old computer's beep speaker.

  • Working on a Bass this time. We'll see what happens.

Going with 3 peizo + jack. Had some old strings, using the ADG ones. The tuners were labeled as 'uke/bass/guitar, I can get these strings through but the E would be tough.

Forgot glue so everything is laid out and ready to go.

  • Zenstrument #2 is finished. Yeah, I got a brand name lol :D

When tuning the smallest string popped through the washer, thought it had snapped at first. So I had to add some nipples there to back it up.

Looked at #1 and the smallest string on that had pulled through also, but was stopped by the nipple (#2 nipple pulled out, wasn't glued as well I guess)

Did my first fretboard inlay, looked everywhere for a wheat penny but couldn't find one.

Tried to pull off a sticker on the front and ripped the paper on top of lid, so I add a wood detail.

     This MIGHT become electric.

#3 will be a bass, waiting for tuners and pups...

  • If she sounds like she looks (and I'm sure it does), then you got yourself one fine git!

  •   Thanks Blues Frog...Finished!

(I may carve more/stain in the future, but want to do some more builds first :)  )

The nut works great, also beefed up the bridge more.

And WOW!!!  After carving relief on the neck and mounting the bridge on the top where it doesn't touch the neck, Now it really rings! Before I wasn't getting much volume out of the sound hole. Now it sounds completely different. The entire top vibrates when I strum.

Action is much better now with fingerboard too ( though I could have lowered the nut 1/8" - next time)

    Tuned to EBE.

  • Looking Good! I like the idea of using a toothbrush as a nut. I have plenty of old ones around. Gonna have to experiment now!

Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

  •   Figured I'd post a few pics of today's improvements.

Neck: Fingerboard (needed more string clearance on top.), Relief for box top. Carved headstock, might carve deeper at some point in time but happy for now.

metal supports (washers and spoke nipples) for strings.

Relieved the neck support, I had 3 screws in the bottom, will only use two now. Next build I will put the supports at top and bottom of neck instead of in the middle.
306529729?profile=originalFound an old toothbrush handle to make a nut from.

Made a bridge from some basswood pieces I had laying around.

  • The Little Moose will make a great git. Sounds like you've definately got the bug. Good luck and have fun with it!
