Trying to get 12 bar blues progression right and when I bar across say the 5th Fret I cant get the strings to ring out properly any dark secrets to this
Barre behind the fret, not over it, make sure you don't let your finger hang over the fret otherwise that will damp the note, press down hard enough to make sure the strings are "stopped" firmly onto the fret. No secret - a barre chord is pretty much the simplest chord to hold down, it just needs a bit of strength in the hand, and accuracy every time. If action of the guitar (ie the height of the strings over the frets) is much more than 2.5mm (1/8") it will be hard to fret, so get that attended to pronto if the action is too high.

You are playing a fretted guitar, not a fretless, right?
Thanks for that . So it needs to be 1/8 all the way down the neck?
