  • you're right, about the matouqin and about Inner Mongolia (it's Baotou). The "instrument" is a fake, about 3 times as large as the original (it's like 4/4 double bass compared to a 1/2 cello). I heard it both on TV (master of the instrument, Chi Bulag) and in one of the city's parks during last weekend. And well, it's like a 2 string (1 melodic and 1 drone string) cello...

  • Looks like a "ma tou qin" (horse head violin), as the Chinese call them. It's a Mongolian 2-string bowed instrument which the Mongolians call "morin khur". I've seen a couple at finer Chinese musical instrument shops here in Shenzhen; still quite an oddity here in southern China. I haven't heard it played. Definitely a good excuse to visit either "Inner Mongolia" (in China) or Mongolia; that and barbequed goat.
