Any ceramic bowl could work as a "gourd;" you'd just have to figure out attachments for the drum head to stretch over. Hmmm. I have some masonry drill bits out in the garage..."Honey, where's that kewl expensive hand-painted bowl whe got in Istanbul last year?"

Real nice, especially if I had a kiln so I could custom shape the body & neck pockets.
Also the texture and colors open up many possibilities. Beautiful banjo!

Very cool. I do ceramics also and have attempted and Udu (a little thick so it's a bit muffled).
Hadn't seen a usage for string instruments though.
