cbg tuning

Hi . First post on this site . Have just finished my first cbg and tuned it with a stagg tuner . All sounds ok until you try to play it.As soon as you touch the strings they sound dead.I have gone off the charts for fret distances and bridge distance.

It is unfretted by the way with only pencill marks at moment.

Any advice welcomed please

Chris

  • 3/8 inch to half an inch at the midway point  (where the 12th fret would be) would suit me - some like more

and 1/8 inch or wee bit less - or a bit more up at the nut.

  • Thanks uncle John. Can,t put photo on at minute but what space should there be for optimum performance
    Thanks
  • Ron is on target.  We likely need a photo or two of the guitar.   Side view for string height and top view too.

  • Thanks for advice, I,m going to have to practice a bit more
  • If the strings sound dead, sounds to me like you're pressing down with the slide too hard. You want the slide to ride lightly atop the strings. It's a technique issue that you just gotta practice until you get it. Other thing that can happen, if it's a mag pup, is that you press the strings too close to the pole pieces, effectively causing them not to vibrate freely enough to change the magnetic field enough to create enough voltage. If it's a piezo pup, then this won't matter, as piezos only generate current by contact vibration. Try not mashing on the strings so hard, and see what happens.
  • Hi Ron .Thanks for reply. I,m after unfretted, slide and with pickup .
    Thanks Chris
  • Are you trying to play slide, or fingered-but-unfretted? Is it all acoustic, or does it hae a pickup?
