vintage boxes?

Posted on December 10, 2010 at 12:46pm 1 Comment

a friend told me about a flea market that had some cigar boxes....stopped in and scored a couple of nice ones, but the lagniappe box I picked up i think is vintage, but I'm not really sure. It has a 'Jockey Club' logo embossed on the top and front side. There is also a logo with a horse in it that says 'The Winner'. Anyone know anything about this particular box? It's not all that big, but I think it would make a fine ukulele. I'll try to get a picture of it and post it up so that may help.… Continue

I just did a Google search and it returned "Punch" as having a line of "Jockey Club Cigars". So, the Hong King connection is probably incorect.

Hi John.

"Jockey Club" is also the name of the horse racing gambling monopoly over in Hong Kong. Maybe the cigar box is somehow related to Hong Kong's Jockey Club. I'd be interested in knowing, because if it's true, then I might have a fairly local source for cigar boxes.

I found 3 old boxes at an antique shop, and proceded to cut one up and make a guitar out of it. When I was done I noticed the 1904 date on the box. Woops! Maybe it's worth something? I don't care! It's a killer vintage CBG now!

howdy john, got a few answers fer ya.i used a piece of pine under the coverplate when punching the holes thru it. on the neck recess that goes thru the box,i leave 1/2in. or 3/4 in. flush wood on both neck side and tail piece side but shave at least 1/8 in. of the rest of the neck thru so the lid does not touch the neck thru except at the outer edges, and then i put a screw in the outer edges to attach box lid to neck thru. i usually put leather in-between the neck thru and the lid under the bridge where i mount the piezo, cause the leather eliminates a lot of unnecessary feedback, so only the leather touches the lid.the piezo is in the neck thru piece, with leather in-between the lid and the piezo this helps eliminate the negative effect of the tone if the piezo was attached to the lid only and floating so to speak. hope this helps, let me know what ya think.

welcome, john. just stopped by ta let ya know you were correct on your guess about the punch to make the holes in the resonator coverplate. i used 2 different size leather punches from C.S.Osbourne upholstery supply company.after the holes are punched it leaves a recessed spot around the hole so i flip the coverplate and tap the area around the hole back flat with a little brass hammer and that works out great. i was in lafayette louisiana a few weeks ago,and left 3 instruments there with my oldest brother,i believe he is now hooked on cigar box guitars. he has played music since before i was born. take care john, you can ask me any thing you might want to about building instruments the way i do and i will always answer the best i can.
