Building My First CB Gitty Kit

Posted on January 12, 2019 at 9:00pm 5 Comments

Every year around December my family asks me to provide gift ideas. I always do, but typically they ignore most of them and I end up getting socks or dress shirts or something like that. I don't want to sound ungrateful, I always appreciate it, but this year my older sister surprised me with a Tin Pan Alley kit from CB…

My New Alexandria CBG Adventure

Posted on November 12, 2018 at 7:30pm 3 Comments

Ever since I learned about the Cigar Box Guitar Museum (inside of Speal’s Tavern) in New Alexandria, Pennsylvania, I’ve wanted to visit and see this unique collection of instruments. Last month, I haphazardly noticed Shane Speal and the Snakes were playing there on 11/10 and decided it was time to cross this item off my proverbial bucket list. Here's a recap of my adventure...

After boarding a 737 outbound from Dallas' Love Field, I arrived at…

My Foray Into the World of CBGs

I started my musical exploration on bass back in my late teens. A buddy of mine was learning guitar and needed someone to play bass for him. "It's so easy," he said, "there's only 4 strings and all you do is play one note." Well, needless to say, I quickly found out bass playing is significantly more complicated than that. After playing bass for a bit, I tried out a guitar. Guitar led to synthesizer, and synth led to drums. Somewhere along the way I picked up a mandolin, a harmonica, a…

Oh, now I read your background (above) and you made it from Texas to the St. Louis fest.  Cool.  I went down there for a club meeting.  Nice folks, great venue, some good builders and performers.

You are making some cool gits and interesting videos.  I like that Best Friend's Girl and guitar.  You nailed it pretty well.  It's good to have you for a CBN friend.

Its pretty much a social network here.  The best way to enjoy it is to comment kindly on others posts, develop relationships and friendships.  Generally too, the etiquette is to post just one video a day so as not to push someone else off the video page.

How long have you been at this?  You sure play well.

I'm a long time multi-instrumentalist and home recording enthusianst. I’ve played in several local bands. From the first time I saw Justin Johnson and Shane Speal play a CBG, I knew I had to have one and better yet... build one. I'm into experimental sounds and I think a CBG, while great for traditional front porch music, is also good for experimental stuff. Here is an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAQM-TzxIQI
