The Best Jugs in Kentucky Are Empty

Posted on September 18, 2019 at 6:00am 3 Comments

Since I’ve been involved with the homemade musical instrument community, I’ve noticed more and more coincidences in my life. I’m not sure if they’re happening more often or if I’m just more attune to them, but I’ve noticed increased synchronicity…

The Accidental Canjo

This is one of those stories that you just can’t make up. It happened yesterday afternoon and I felt the need to share it with all of you. I was sitting at the computer watching some videos on Cigar Box Nation when my dogs started scratching at…

CBGs Required, Pitchforks Optional

Posted on August 27, 2019 at 2:00pm 3 Comments

This past weekend, I made a trek to York, PA and attended the 10th Annual Pennsylvania Cigar Box Guitar Festival. It was a heck of a good time and I drew a ton of inspiration from the folks in attendance. In fact, as…

A Tale of Two Ukes

Posted on June 25, 2019 at 10:00am 3 Comments

The truth be told, I’ve never been a big fan of ukuleles. Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve always appreciated the sound, but I never gravitated towards this particular instrument. Needless to say, ukuleles are popular with CBG builders because…

Finding Xanadu in Memphis

Posted on April 13, 2019 at 6:00pm 5 Comments

When I first started learning about CBGs, I discovered John Lowe, a luthier and performer in Memphis, Tennessee. He does a one-man show under the moniker Johnny Lowebow and builds string instruments known as Lowebows. I had read he owns a…

@ Poorness

Thanks. I think my ideas come from thinking outside the box, because I've never been IN the box.

I'm planning other builds, but have no idea  what I'm going to do with them all.

Glad you made the trip! On boatmans dance the sound like marbles is actually spoons! Idk seemed appropriate for it.

I'm a long time multi-instrumentalist and home recording enthusianst. I’ve played in several local bands. From the first time I saw Justin Johnson and Shane Speal play a CBG, I knew I had to have one and better yet... build one. I'm into experimental sounds and I think a CBG, while great for traditional front porch music, is also good for experimental stuff. Here is an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAQM-TzxIQI
