Pickup mounted in pan

Hey everyone...I,m building a frying pan type 3 string. I want to add a pickup mounted trough the top. what type of pickup would be best? also, I'm concerned about the pickup reading the metal pan [it,s kinda thick.] I'm wondering if i should open a bigger hole in the top and then surrounding the pickup with some thin wood to distance it from the metal. Another wonder I have is when ghosting a pickup I have seen somewhere someone put small [1/8"x 1/16"?] magnets between the surface and the…See More

Pickup mount

Howdy...I am building a two string, short scale, stand up ( well...sit down) bass. I want to mount a Gitty bass pickup under the strings but on top of a short L bracket which will be mounted to a block on the inside wall of the narrow box. This L bracket would pierce the top through a narrow slit, bend at 90 degrees, and allow the pickup to be mounted directly under the strings. The pickup would be mounted on top of the bracket on a thin wooden base. My question...Would a bar metal L bracket…See More

Pickup mount

Posted on November 13, 2020 at 8:17am 0 Comments

I am building a two string short scale stand up ( actually, sit down) bass. I hope to use a Gitty bass pickup suspended under the strings on an L shaped bracket that will be mounted to the side. The body is long and narrow so I feel I will be able to make the bracket stiff enough for this application. My question... Would a metal bracket interfere with the pickup doing its job, or would an aluminum bracket be required, so as not to trouble the magnetic vibes. Either way, the bracket would be…

Pickup mounting options

Hey... long time member, infrequent commenter here. Some time ago,I read an entry about mounting a 3 pole pickup under the sound board and then placing three small (3/16?) magnets on top of the soundboard and over the poles as a way to extend the magnet field. I also recently noted a Dave Lynas build where he apparently mounted a flatpup under the soundboard with success. I am very interested in these approaches, and any information or guidance in this area would be appreciated  Thanks

Diotonic scale vs. blues scale

Posted on August 25, 2015 at 9:07am 2 Comments

Hello from Madison, Wisco. I'm a newbee, and love this site. I've got my first three string (24 3/4 scale) to a point where I'm beyond my depth. I wonder if a diatonic fretless fingerboard would be good for using a slide to attempt blues but also to possibly play old gospel and REGGAE without the slide. I plan on indicating fret positions so as to be helpful when not using a slide. I have never played a musical instrument before, and know I need to start as simple as possible. May be I'll be…

Hi Terry, it's good to have contact with like minded people. I couldn't find very much information regarding building hub cap guitars, so have worked out a plan that I hope works. I didn't want any extraneous nuts and bolts, trying to keep it fairly simple. So far have built the neck, fret board, internal frame, and installed a beer cap piezo pickup which should lie just under the bridge. The assembly will begin tomorrow, trying to keep everything straight will be an act, so the strings end up parallel with the top hub cap, fingers crossed. Will take pictures and post them here somewhere.

Hi Terry, Al here from Australia. Being an old guy and also new to this game/hobby, I found the following URL very helpful for calculating the frets on 2 x 3 string guitars, first one a smoked salmon box, present one made from hub caps. https://www.stewmac.com/FretCalculator
