the heel block is there to help tighten the can's position on the neck, and the tail piece holds on the bottem side of the body.

    Did the sound holes help?  I was thinking about putting a set of "speaker grille" holes into the back of my Canadian Club tin box guitar to help loosen up the muddy sound a bit.
