It just butts up to the edge of the box and doesn't go inside

Not made to add any support, as I doubt it does that. I may add another quarter inch piece to match before gluing and sanding down for finish work. This box is a bit thin, The neck is cut to allow the lid to close and will be secured inside the box with support wood pieces. The neck runs through the box. This is just a trial piece to see if it works at all or not.
