Walnut gussets were added to the sides of the headstock to allow the depth needed to fit bass guitar tuners. They are a massive improvement over the original friction-fit cello tuners. I had to cut the curl off the end of the neck to fit the tuner for the D string, which also helps modernize the look of the instrument.
