The strings that I used are .022, .016 and .010 plain steel. I initially used a .009 but they break fairly easy. Also, I would not tune this above an open E tuning, I popped the bottom string two times trying to tune it to an open G. I tired wound strings but didn’t like the sound at all, so I went back to the plain steel strings (sounds more like a banjo this way anyway). Finally, I attempted to put my stamp on the inside of the drum head, and now I can see it upside down on the front side. So if you build one of the things don’t put anything on the back side of the head.

I now have .020, .016 and .010 plain steel strings on it and it sounds better.
I think that I'll get rid of the .022 and try a .020 instead. The .022 is heavy duty and has sort of a deadened sound to it.
