This is a piece of siver plated brass. It was intended to be a connector for making necklaces, as are the sound hole covers. If you go on Ebay and search for "brass findings" you will see hundreds of cool looking pieces like these. I think they make more interesting sound hole covers than plain brass grommets or traditional screens. In the case of this tailpiece, it's there to keep the strings from digging into the wood.
