  Hey Rodney you are right the key I think is not to over tighten at the start. You could also use pins if you were so inclined.

  this can be a little tricky sometimes, but once one has it down,it works great. nice show.

  Simple but effective scarf joint. Next I'll flatten in face and glue on an overlay for the headstock.
