On the Cigarbox Uke, above, it used a neck block with two screw into the heal of the neck, if your not going to use the neck through, banjo style, a neck heal becomes nesissary
It gives an attachment point to lock down or counter act the string tension, a bridge plate helps with stability at the bridge and probably should be installed, I've also used top bracing when I wanted to stiffen up the top/soundboard.
