I have a couple of tenor ukuleles on the workbench right now (tenor= about 17 in. scale) I managed to cut decent scarf joints out of poplar using only hand tools. The top one has the fingerboard in place and headstock shaped. The bottom is just the neck and headstock before shaping

Jamie, I actually didn't, make a jig, although I probably will in future. I just marked the wood on all four sides and worked really slowly and carefully. A jig would probably be easier.

Did you make a jig to help you cut the joint? I was thinking about trying it soon myself.
