Start 'em early, I say. My four-year-old granddaughter has been helping me build CBGs so she asked if we could build one for her fifth birthday. The mando neck and scale length were the right size for her, so she picked a small box (7x7x2-3/4) to match. We built it with four strings for simplicity sake. The neck is poplar, the fretboard oak with walnut fretmarkers. The soundholes are screened - she is only five. I did manage to keep the butterfly a secret until it was stained. When she saw it, her eyes opened wide and she gushed, "It's beautiful!"
