Funny you should mention a 3 hour guitar, I just finished a 2 hour RAT ROD diddley bow. It's great, sounds really good and I paid zero attention to finish or aesthetics....purely functional...slab of wood, 3 tuna cans, threaded rod, 4 screws, wire and a turnbuckle (plus the usual electrics)
