Here is a quick test trying to crack an Alumitone pupThe coil runs to the screw and an atracting magnet not conectedbottom left. The magnetic field must go up and over to the second magnet. This only works when the left yellow earth wire is connected to ground and the aluminium. The coil has two conections to the jack socket.I think they also use a current system, with some kind of stepo up device, as this one might give interference, but kind a proves the idea.Aluminium is keen to give up its electrons, so must help this whole electrical field flow.I have also done some tests tonight with telephone coils and what came clear was as you ran over a fret it gets louder, so the earth field is a key to a good sound... go fill around your pickup holes with sticky back copper and see what I mean.
