My first one (3 string) I used a 1x2 piece of poplar and it bowed a little. This 2nd one (4 string) I used a 1x2 piece of oak with a poplar finger board. It seems very substantial. My last one (4 string) was 1x2 piece of oak with an oak fingerboard and it seems rock solid. All neck material was purchased stock from Lowes.
