Pickup for Lapsteel

I am building a simple lap steel. I would like to buy a pickup ( 6 string) that is already to go ( dont want to build it) Any suggestions on where to go to find one. My strings spacing on my bridge is 2.024 E-E center

  • I realize that you might have finished your lap steel by now. However, my experience might be useful to others. I have just finished a lap steel and bought a cheap dual rail humbucker pickup of eBay I had some prewired pots left over and wanted to use them. The pickup I had bought had a black and a white wire, plus a red and a green. What I discovered is that the red and the green wires are not required if just using a tone and a volume pot, that the black heavier wire is hot and that the white finer wire is the earth. There was a useful diagram on the Hand Made Music website that helped with where to solder the wires.

    Cheers Peter

  • I have gotten some really good deals at music shops by asking to see their used pickups.

  • Ebay is a good option. Your local music store should have them.

  • If unable to find one online (i.e. Ebay. or other source) you could get Ted Crocker to build one for you to your specs. There are alternatives too. You could use either a lipstick style, or dual rail style pickup, which doesn't have "poles". Or if you're looking for a fatter, warmer tone, go with a humbucker (available in slug/pole style or dual lipstick) Dual lipstick pickups are great. GHS is the place to look for those.
