I'm finishing up my first 4 stringer, and just learning how to play guitar at all. I will probably tune it ADgb (middle 4 strings of "standard" 6 string tuning). If I understand tabs correctly, I should be able to play a standard tab, just move one string up i.e., play 6th string tab on 5th (4th) string? Fer instance the standard tab for picking "I Walk The Line" runs:
1(e) -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2(b) -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3(g) -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4(D) --------------------------0----0-0-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5(A) ---------0----0-0-2-4----0-------4-2-0----0-0----------2----2---------2-2-2--2----------2---2----2----2----2-------
6(E) -0-2-4----0--------------------------------0-------4-2-0----0----0-2-4-------------4-2-0----0---0----0----0----------
So on a 4-string tuned as above it would be played as:
1(b) -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2(g) --------------------------0----0-0-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3(D) ---------0----0-0-2-4----0-------4-2-0----0-0----------2----2---------2-2-2--2----------2---2----2----2----2-------
4(A) -0-2-4----0--------------------------------0-------4-2-0----0----0-2-4-------------4-2-0----0---0----0----0----------
Right? Now the chords for this song are:
A, E7, A
A, E7, A
A, D, A
A, E7, A
which would be fingered the same except for dropping the standard 1(e) string on the D chord? Or, am I changing the key of the lead-in and if so, what chords would I play the body of the song in?
Am I off-base in my thinking?
