RE: bridge __ on my first I used a 5/8ths (or ?? can't remember now ff hand) threaded blank stock (just a 16" long straight post of threaded steel stock, then hack-sawed off the desired length)
On my new one I'm not sure if I'll use the threaded stock again (maybe on a wooden mount, like a 'floating' acoustic bridge -- or might used a length of 1/2" or 3/8ths " square steel stock (or stainless steel) -- mounted that on a floating wood base for looks and height adjustment, and notch the steel where I want the strings to fall (and maybe the same type of square stock for the nut, too)
if you take a look at the close up of teh headstock/nut on my first build, you'll see the threaded stock I'm talking about (it's like a bolt you cut the head off (which you can do if you cant find blank threaded stock...

Hey Colombia, awesome -- pickups --- boy I'll tell you ... my 'crappy ' radio shack piezo mounted to the neck-through (double-stick tape under and just in front of the bridge) somehow it sound really badass and I've found great settings on the amp and effects that make it remarkably useable. NEver ever would've thought a $2.50 thingie would work like that. just had to try a couple different locations before I found the sweet spot on the neck). AND check this out -- I had an old single-coil pick up from a Mex-Strat that I drilled out the holes between the poles and inserted NEW poles and tapped down the 2 outer poles so now have a 9-pole piece pickup for my 3-stringer (three poles for each string) haven't hooked it up yet. fingers crossed. But shoudl work...Might do a dual pick up thing with the strat pickup and a piezo and a rotary blend knob...Hmmmm

Find a junk drawer in someone's garage or basement and you're half way home... Like Chris said, Tuners and guitar strings are the only real specialty items --- or you can also mail order a replacement neck if you want a 6-string (fender neck pocket. blank headstock)...
other than that it's just electronic store wires and a few doo-dads... you can't go wrong with these things! and you can always keep fiddling with details until it sounds and looks like you want it to....peace! ET
Hi Chuck thanks for the info on the store will check it out!

There is a link to the right to the only cigar box store in the world, Cigar Box Central. I ship all over the world but as you can imagine, it's not cheap. The best way to save on shipping is to buy as many as you dare. After the fourth box, additional boxes only add about another $4 to the total shipping cost. Mention this site for 20% off.

Apart from getting cigar boxes (which will be the only tricky part here in the UK) ... get your hardware from Ben and your neck wood from the nearest skip.

Hmmm, it depends how careful you want to be. my first one was simply a working version because I wanted to play it. Later I started making 'prettier' ones more carefully which take longer. Without frets I'd say a week or two (that's if you have a job and a family) You could do it in a few days if you want to get your head down. If you've got woodwork experience, probably quicker i guess.
You could get one off ebay but you'll get none of the pleasure of having built it yourself which is half the addiction.

how many hours would you say you put into making a basic CBG when you started?
and how much would you pay for one from e-bay?
i see Ben is based in the US is there anyone like that in the UK?
