Another Hi from England...Kent

Joined  CB Nation a couple of days ago after discovering Cigar  Box Guitars whilst wandering around the Internet..

I have a Fretted 4 string Electric but am looking to get an Unfretted one as I have found in my experience (all of 2 days) that the frets get in the way of a smooth Slide. Also I think my slides , one glass and one chrome are too long. Recon 1 1/2 inches would be better. Unless anyone knows different.
Thanks for being here.

  • Hey! I too looked for ages for a 1 1/2" slide...couldn't find the right one anywhere and I too was a glass player...I just found a metal spacer slug at a hardware store...PERFECT FIT--- it was kinda rough, so I hooked it up toa spindle and stuck it in my drill press...then held a pice of steel wool to it for ten minutes....the smoothest and best slide ever! ...heavy, but now I'm used to it -- turns out it works nicer and gives full 'fretted' notes with almost no pressure...and it cost me $1.50 if that. Haven't made a fretted box yet...I've learned my own 3-string slide technique that let me find a voice as a musician and I don't even bother with the idea of frets on my slide boxes now...I just use a high action guitar when i want more than 3 strings and want to fret notes.  Glad you're on board here --- way too much cool stuff for inspiration...  ET

  • welcome Mate ..slides are personal taste , they have bone and ceramic now too, as well.I personall dont like em too short, but thats me...good luck

    • Thanks guys. Like Guitar Plectrums I will probably end up with a collection. Apart from length -  width also comes into it.

Both mine are marked Medium, one is probably about right but the other will only fit my little finger.

Time for bed . Its 11 pm here in England.

  • Welcome to the Nation Tony. I haven't got the slide down yet however there are discussions on that topic. I think Shane Speal covered that topic and uses a short socket tool or stubby slide.

  • Hi Tony

Seems we found this place at around the same time.  I'm looking forward to building my first so haven't even thought about slides yet.  Only just started to learn guitar as well so I'm not expecting to even get a tune out of it when it's built ;o)

    • Also looking forward to building one myself.

Been getting bits and pieces together.

Looking for a piece of hardwood at the moment for the neck etc.

      Tony
