string noise

Hi everyone,

I've been working on learning "the walking base line" from Keni's You Tube video "how to play cigar box guitar (3 string) from instructional video CD #4." My issue is that I'm getting a lot of undesirable noise when I drag my fingers down the stings in the series of progressions up and down the neck. I'm guessing it would be less noticeable on a magnetic pickup, rather than a piezo. However, even when I play acoustic I think the sound caused by draging my fingers along the strings is unpleasant.

Any Tips?

  • Why are you dragging your fingers? Pick them up, releaving the downward pressure on the string, and lightly glide around into the next position. It simple sounds to me from your description, you need to lighten up a little bit. Usually when we first learn something our technique is crude, but with practice our touch becomes more refined and less mechanical. I hope this helps to answer your question, Keni Lee

    • Thanks, kinda figured that was the answer. Perhaps it is a bad habit from playing clawhammer banjo on unwound strings. I use a lot of slide action, sometimes for a desirable sound and sometimes maybe for speed which I should break myself of. Thanks for your time.
