Hey all and thanks for your time. I've seen a double neck guitar on eBay and decides they look cool. I'm thinking about building me one but I'm at a loss about what you do with them? I mean, would you usually change key in the middle of a song? Are they supposed to be for two sets of three or four strings just in different keys? Am I better off having a three and a diddley bow on one body? Would that be more use or less use when playing than say two sets of four? I want to have one as something new in my collection but what are they for? BTW, this isn't a dig at them, I'm asking because I don't know the answers. Please someone help me justify the cost with more reason to have one than they just look cool. Please?
Thanks again for your time.

Ah, great question. I got here late and will answer on my own - no reading other posts. For me, double neckers should be of great utility. I play 2 different open G tunings more than anything else. A double with one neck being DGB and the other GDG would give me great versatility. No changing guitars.
Ooh. I could go the four string route of DGBE and GDGB. With occasional use of a capo, I could play in any key and a whole bunch of styles.
Why don't I do it? The truth is sad. Double neckers are too flashy for me and I feel like a poseur when I use one. I know. I am a dumb shit. I should overcome that and build and play one. It would suit my playing.
You totes should make one Uncle John. Even if it's your indoor video recording guitar only. I think you'd rock it out with one. Thanks for helping and for the comment too. Much appreciated.
You and Pick have me thinking about a double. I had better take two Build Stops.
Build it Uncle John. You know you want to. We know you'd rock it out. Nothing should be left unmade and undone for shudda coulda woulda's to sneak in and start whispering their "oh if only..." and speaking their regrets. Build it, inspire others, do more good in the world, recycle something saving the planet. I could go on but you're going to build one anyway. Right? Go on! Nothing to it but to do it, as the saying goes. Besides if you build one and you don't like it then give it to a child without music or a vet in need of one. It makes sense.
Meanwhile I'm chuckling away to myself being the one trying to echo the voice in yoir head. You won't regret it.
i call bullshit . . i found your high-school picture .
I looked good back then, didn't I, Pick? But kind of like a poseur.
XD
Hello,
I haven't been active on this site for a year or so but I saw your post in my email and thought I would share some pics of one I built a few years ago. It was a lot of fun to build and play. I used a cat food and water dish for the resonator.
Good Luck on yours!
Chuck

Incredible instrument. Really loved seeing the attention to detail. No way mine is going to look that well done though. My woodworking skills leave a LOT to be desired haha. Thanks for sharing and for the inspiration in sharing these. Much appreciated.
