my first fretless i make action real high 1/2 inch, because "what did it matter...no frets".... but i think this was a mistake. allows you to "over press" down on the strings, which takes out of tune, and personally I think you should get used to a softer touch. That way when you transition to a fretted model, you don't have to change your playing style, etc. I am not a good player, but I think good players don't need the 1/2 big high action. When fretted, I like the strings to be about a penny and a half off the fretboard at the first few frets, and my fretless is no more than 3 pennies from fretboard to bottom of string. Just my opinion. 3 string cbg....half the strings, twice the soul!
I use a wedge of plywood as a temporary bridge and set upo the strings to get the most comfortable height. I mark off the point and draw aperpendiculr to the base of the wedge. Then I have the height for the bridge. Simple and easy.
If you have access to a frettedcgb or standard. Fret the second fret, and measure the gap at the first fret. Or, lay a straightedge along the frets and measure up, ie; the top of the fret to the bottom of the notch in the nut. Also, just take your time and go slow in till its comfortable to press the string down with out buzz.
