Soundboard / top thickness?

Ok I was looking at the thicknesses of the top and bottom of the box I plan on using. The top is made of a thin (1/8"+) wood panel and the back is a thin (1/16"+) plywood panel. Which one would be the better choice for my Soundboard / top panel?

  • Well I have choose to make what was the top the back of my guitar body and re-skinned the back with a better plywood top from another box that tea came in. I could of just used the tea box, but I didn't like how big it is...

    • Looks lovely. Let us know how it works out!
  • Richey is this what you mean....

    • Spot on. The lid of this box was about 1/8"
  • By you saying brace it, do you mean putting the bridge on a pad to spread out the pressure or something underneath the bridge area?
    • Yeah a bridge block would certainly help. Have a google for fan bracing images and you'll see what I mean. There might be some bracing pics on my page here, too.
  • As a rule of thumb, a thinner soundboard gives more volume, and a thicker one more sustain. I would say that 1/16" does sound a little too thin though, it might crush under the string tension unless you brace it.
