Looking for inexpensive strings

Musician's Friend has some acoustic string packs from Musician's Gear (80/20 Bronze guitar strings) and D'Addario starting around $2.49 a pack.  I'm curious if anyone around here has ever used these, and if so, which packs work best for your 3-string guitar builds?

  • I use those Musicians Friends strings, both the acoustic and electric for factory built and home made guitars.  Decent and so cheap.  If I am building a guitar for electric play, I prefer the electric strings.  For acoustic play, the acoustic strings take a bit more finger pressure to fret and give a bit more volume.

  • FWIW these work fine, quite pretty too.  I use the 42,32,24s (all wound) on my three string fretless.

    • Wow, I may give those Orphee's a try.  Great price on them... and... bookmarked! :)

  • Sorry, "way too thick"... not "way to thick"
I would edit it, but the Edit option doesn't actually DO anything in here for me.

    ... because it HATESEZ us!!

    ... hack! hack! gollum. >:(
  • I've got Shane Speal's various stubby slides on the wishlist as well. I'm currently using a bottle from an old spice rack (way to thick for my finger, but has a really good tone to it) and a Hillman steel cabinet spacer from Lowe's that I picked up the other day (3/4" x 1" x2"). Really wish they'd had the 1/2" ones in stock as this one's a bit too large for my finger as well.

... stupid, skinny artist fingers! Why aren't you fat and chubby and covered in callouses like everyone else?! :(
  • I fully support purchasing from CBGitty.

However, I'm just starting out in this and need to get the most materials that I can work with as I'm learning how to do this before I can start making money from it, so I'm going with 'who sells the most, cheap items that I can use right now to practice on?' As I get better and more confident in my abilities, I'll definitely migrate towards the higher quality items. For now, I'm still in the 'oh man... I'm going to fubar this beyond all comprehension... then I'll be out all of this money... and... man, why am I even bothering with this?! I SUCK!!'

I do have their fret making system on my wishlist for either my birthday (November) or Christmas; so maybe someone else in my family (who like, you know, has MONEY...) can help set me up with that later. :)
  • Picked up some little nails and superglue. Going to try playing with the idea of making frets using my miter box saw, then shaving off the ends and filing them down. Sure, they probably won't work and I'll end up with tetanus... but that's half the joys of discovery!
  • I buy all my strings from CBGitty, great service reasonable prices and he spends a fortune on two web sites, cigarboxnation.com and cigarboxguitar.com on wich he gives away tons of free advice and how to.

Just my opinion but buy from the guy who wants to help you. Rotten Roger

  • Got 30 machine tuners and 4 sets of strings ordered! Maybe by the time they all arrive (possible mid July) I may actually be able to get one of these stupid things working :)
  • Try a set of mediums and a set of lights.. See which you, like better
