Help with dressing frets

I got my recent build about wrapped up. My problem is that now that I have the nut and bridge on it, I have a buzz on the 1st and 2nd frets. I have filed the 2nd and 3rd frets to the point I'm uncomfortable taking any more off of them, and it still persists. I shimmed up the bridge and that got rid of it but the string heights bordered on obscene. Do I need to take more off those 2 frets? I know what I remove from one, ultimately has to come from the other. I just don't want to take so much off the 3rd that I have to start shaving the 4th...

Also, on this topic, any tips on dressing them without filing into the finish of the neck?

  • Have you checked for proper nut height?  If not, try this.  Fret the string on the third fret.  With another finger, check to see how much clearance you have between the string and the first fret.  Prolly should have .003 to .005".

Oh, I guess I'm assuming your frets are level.  Have you checked fr high frets with a straight edge.  If not, that could help you find the problem.
