building a cigar box from scratch

i am in the process of building a couple of 'cigar' boxes from scratch. the first has sides 1/4" thick and is 11 x 7 x 1 3/4. i have yet to source timber for a lid and base. the second is slightly bigger and has 10mm (approx 3/8") thick sides and measures |18 x 8 x 1 3/4.they will be glued together with rebate joints

i have yet to decide what timber to use for the top and base, whether to laminate some strips to form a piece large enough for what i need or to just use 1/4 or 3/8 ply, what do you guys recommend ?

  • It just depends on how far you want to take it really... I would have thought 1/4" ply would sound quite similar to a cigar box lid, but of course you also have the option of using a traditional guitar tonewood, such as spruce, maple or mahogany. Bear in mind that if you use 1/8" solid wood, like an acoustic guitar, you will need to add some bracing to prevent the string tension damaging the lid. Here's one of mine with a homemade spruce box:
