I've been looking in lots of places for a used, even a little beat-up, 5-string banjo neck I can use to put on a cookie tin to make a 5-string cookie tin banjo. I have a 4-string that a friend made for me years ago; I tune and play it as a tenor guitar, and I LOVE it! I want to build one that has the 5th "drone" string. I can't seem to find any for a reasonable price. I even made a post on banjocafe.net asking for help in my search--no replies!
What I really want is a short-scale 5-string banjo neck.
I've thought of carving my own, but gosh--I'm just not any good at carving.
Can anyone point me in the direction of where I can find such a thing? Used--fine. Ratty--fine.
Thanks!

There are a few in the 50-60 dollar range as in the above link. There's also a way to turn that 4 string into a 5 string by gluing or screwing a narrow piece onto the side of the neck. Or, you could do as Dennis Havlena did here

Good luck!
I built a 4 string banjo out of a fruit cake tin. It came out really cool.
What strings did you use for it? I'm making an instrument for a charity auction for the resale shop I buy a lot of stuff from. And decided to make a 4 string out of all things from the shop (except tuners, then neck, and pickup.) I'm using a fork for the tailpiece. Since it has 4 strings I figured that's what I go with, but not sure what strings.
