Hi,  I had the same dilemma when I began making. I had an old guitar neck already first time, but it was way too wide. I chose not to actually finger the strings i.e. chords etc, but instead to use a slide. I reduced the width of the neck quite substantially from a six string down to a three string. It was still a tapered neck getting fatter toward the bridge end. At the nut end, the strings are about 3/16th" in from the edge, and about 10mm apart, at the fatter end, there is about a 3/8th" gap in from the edge, still 10mm apart though. 

A parallel neck is different in this though, as long as you do not get the string rolling off the edge, then a 3/36th" gap is fine. I personally favour the 10mm gap between as that suits my fingers. Can I suggest holding down say, a conventional 'C' chord on a tabletop and measuring it to see what you need. There are no given measurements in CGB's really. It is all down to the designer... good luck with your constructs..!!!

I believe Shane Speal uses 1.25” wide necks for his Chuggers? Also the 2 string Portland Cowboy project from his book uses a 1” wide neck?
