The clue to the ukulele sound is also that the top string is tuned an octave higher. The Standard tuning is G C E A. The secondary tuning is A D F# B. They always have 4 strings.

The tuning scale of a ukulele is much shorter than a guitar. A Soprano uke is usually a 13" scale whereas guitars are generally range from about 23 to 25" depending on what the builder wants.

I have a box I think will make a good Uke, now can you explain what makes a Uke a Uke and not just a short 4 string guitar? Can they be 3 string also? Thanks

The Mandolin
The mandolin is a short-necked Neapolitan lute with four pairs of steel strings tuned like a violin. The first instruments of that type can be seen on pictures from the 15th century, although the name 'Mandolin' was not used until the 17th century. After WWI Bill Monroe made this instrument popular in a new style of music, 'bluegrass'. As a soloist instrument, mandolin is usually played 'pontiado' being the soprano's voice in a larger group of instruments.

Niels - that is cool. Chris - yea the moon & one of the trees is a sound hole. We glued a piece of drywall sand paper to the back. I don't know what it's made out of, but it sparkles in the light. Too cool. You guys have to check out some drywall sandpaper for sure.
