Has anyone built a CBU from Mainland Uks parts?

Hi everyone, I play a KALA spruce top Tenor and have been just learning
cords and strums when I came upon a youtube video of a fellow playing a
CBU. It had unique sound that caught my interest and by the end of the
video I knew I had to build one.
So here I am, some parts in hand ready to learn how to build a Cigar Box Ukulele.
If you look at my first picture you will see I've acquired parts from Mainland Uks and a local cigar shop.
Has anyone built a Ukulele from Mainland's parts?
Thanks
Steve

  • Hi Al
Actually one set of tuners is geared, one set is better quality friction and 2 sets of plastic friction tuners came free.
I look forward to seeing your work.

Steven, I've thought about using some of Mainlands parts but haven't as yet. Should be fun though except I like geared tuners over friction for better tone control. I've built three UKE's and 8 CBG's, all were fun. The latest is a Soprano UKE from a kit from Grizzly Tools. I'll post pics tomorrow. Happy building.

  • Thanks Niels
Have you posted any pictures of the build?

neck, nut and tuners. It's a big hassle saver when you are short on workshops and tools to build with.

  • You'll find that most here do it from scratch.

Nothing commercial except strings and tuners.

It has been done, but IMHO, it would be easier to do from scratch.

  • Yes, I have built a tenor cigar box ukulele, an electric cigar box baritone and an electric cigar box bass. No commercially produced parts (apart from the electrics) were used for these instruments, sorry.
